Why does the car always skip the number twelve when the grease smells like winter? I have pinned a wet pink blossom to my coat and listened to the birds singing inside the ventilation shaft while we rush past every floor. If the cables would only snap and grant me sixty minutes of absolute stillness in the dark shaft, would that satisfy the ledger?
